Description

A FAMILLE ROSE ‘PEONY AND PLUM BLOSSOM’ DISH
18TH CENTURY
ESTIMATE: $400 – $800
Description
This elegant dish is a fine example of 18th-century famille rose porcelain, showcasing the delicate transition of the palette during the mid-Qing period. The central medallion is expertly painted with a vibrant scene of blossoming peonies and plum branches, symbolic of prosperity and endurance. The composition is airy and balanced, with the use of thick “opaque” enamels particularly evident in the rose-pinks and whites of the floral petals.
The cavetto features a sophisticated decorative scheme with a green “honeycomb” diaper ground, interrupted by shaped cartouches enclosing floral sprays. The rim is finished with a classic iron-red and gold foliate band. Notably, the base retains a historical antique dealer’s label from “Eug. Van Herck, Anvers,” indicating its past provenance in a prominent Belgian collection. The reverse is further characterized by traditional metal staple repairs, a testament to the high value placed on this piece by earlier generations of collectors.
Dimensions
• Diameter: 23 cm (9 in)
CONDITION REPORT
The dish is in stable condition. It features visible hairline cracks that have been historically stabilized with metal staples (锔钉) to the reverse, adding a unique historical character to the piece. There is minor surface wear, localized pitting, and light scratches to the enamels consistent with its age and use. The foot rim shows expected shelf wear and small nicks. No modern professional restoration was detected.
Provenance
• From a Private Canadian Collection
• Previously with Eug. Van Herck, Antwerp (bearing gallery label to the base)
