Description

A FLAMBE-GLAZED ‘DOUBLE-CONJOINED’ VASE WITH ELEPHANT HANDLES
YONGZHENG PERIOD QING DYNASTY
ESTIMATE: $15,000 – $25,000
Description
This rare and masterfully potted porcelain vase features a “double-conjoined” structure, with two hexagonal-section vessels seamlessly fused together. The mouth rim is elegantly shaped in a foliated “water chestnut” (lingkou) form, mirrored by the faceted, multi-lobed body. The neck is flanked by two meticulously sculpted elephant-head handles, symbolizing peace and universal harmony (taiping youxiang).
The vessel is enveloped in a magnificent flambé (yaobian) glaze, an imperial innovation of the Yongzheng period that sought to replicate and transcend the classical Jun wares of the Song dynasty. The glaze displays a brilliant synthesis of deep crimson and rich purple, streaked with opalescent splashes of lavender and sky-blue that flow naturally along the vertical ribs. At the edges and the mouth, the glaze thins to a pale mushroom-white, highlighting the vessel’s complex architectural silhouette. The base is finished with a typical brown-mottled “iron” wash, consistent with the high-quality production of the imperial kilns.

CONDITION REPORT
The vase is in excellent condition. The flambé glaze is exceptionally vibrant with a high-gloss finish and typical “orange-peel” texture. Standard inspection reveals no cracks, chips, or restorations to the body or the handles. The unglazed foot rim shows natural oxidation and wear consistent with the Yongzheng period.
