The first bottle is a sophisticated example of combined glass techniques, featuring a semi-translucent glass body with a vibrant red overlay. The red layer has been skillfully carved through to reveal “windows” or medallions, within which a delicate inside-painted landscape is rendered. The painting depicts a serene misty mountainous scene, harmonizing beautifully with the bold red frame. The second bottle is crafted from clear glass, featuring two distinct narratives: one side depicts “Pine and Cranes” (Songhe Yannian), rendered with fine brushwork, while the reverse showcases a panoramic view of an ancient walled city, complete with traditional architectural details and a sense of historical depth.

Inside-painting (neihua) is one of the “Four Great Crafts” of Chinese snuff bottles, requiring the artist to work through the narrow neck of the bottle using a specialized hooked brush. These 20th-century examples demonstrate the continued mastery of this technique. The “Red Overlay” style adds a layer of decorative complexity, framing the painting like a window into another world. The “Pine and Cranes” motif remains a perennial favorite for its auspicious wish for longevity, while the “Ancient City” scene reflects a 20th-century interest in historicism and nostalgic landscapes. CONDITION REPORT
• Condition: Both bottles are in overall excellent condition. The inside-painted pigments remain vivid and stable. No chips, cracks, or restorations to the glass bodies. The red overlay on the first bottle is crisp and well-defined.
