The pair of snuff bottles is masterfully crafted from a semi-translucent, “snowflake” glass ground, characterized by a charming, bubble-suffused matrix that mimics the texture of fallen snow. Each bottle features a vibrant, transparent red glass overlay, which has been expertly carved to reveal a continuous landscape of birds and flowers. The artisans utilized the contrast between the jewel-like red and the misty white ground to create a vibrant, three-dimensional scene. The fluid carving style and the quality of the glass suggest a production period spanning the late 18th to the 19th century, a golden era for the “Palace style” glassworks.

The combination of red on a “snowflake” ground is one of the most celebrated color palettes in Chinese overlay glass, often associated with the aesthetic of the Imperial workshops. The “Birds and Flowers” motif is not only a tribute to the beauty of nature but also a carrier of auspicious wishes for harmony and vitality. The choice of transparent red glass provides a gem-like brilliance, catching the light and highlighting the rhythmic precision of the carved lines. Standing at approximately 5.5 cm, these bottles were designed for tactile enjoyment and visual delight, embodying the sophisticated material culture of the Qing dynasty elite.

CONDITION REPORT
• Condition: Both bottles are in overall very good condition. The red overlay remains exceptionally crisp with vivid color. The glass ground shows characteristic natural air bubbles (snowflake effect). Minor expected surface wear and tiny pin-point nibbles to the edges consistent with age.
• 状况： 两件烟壶整体品相良好。套料色彩鲜艳，雕工清晰。涅白地呈现天然的“雪花地”气泡效果。见时代特征之极轻微表面磨损及棱角处微小自然剥蚀，符合其年代特征，保存状况理想。
