Description

A POTTERY FIGURE OF A RECLINING HORSE
HAN DYNASTY (206 BC–AD 220)
ESTIMATE: $35.000– $55.000
Description
This substantial pottery figure of a horse is depicted in a rare reclining posture, capturing the naturalistic and robust aesthetic of the Han Dynasty. The figure is composed of two separate sections: a powerful, blocky body and a detachable, spirited head with an arched neck. The head is finely modeled with alert ears, protruding eyes, and flared nostrils, showing the remnants of white and earthy pigments.
The heavy, unglazed grey pottery is characteristic of funerary wares (mingqi) from this period, intended to accompany the deceased into the afterlife. The surface retains much of its original burial loess and encrustation, adding to its archaic character. The anatomical proportions emphasize the strength of the animal, with a broad chest and a rounded rump featuring a circular aperture for the insertion of a tail.
Dimensions
• Overall Size: 38 cm x 14 cm x 28 cm (15.0 in x 5.5 in x 11.0 in)
CONDITION REPORT
The pottery figure is in overall stable and good condition. As is typical for Han dynasty pottery, there are various surface abrasions, minor chips, and expected signs of age and burial consistent with its early dating. The head is detached from the body as originally manufactured, and the neck joint shows signs of natural wear. Significant remnants of original pigments and earthen encrustations remain on the surface. No evidence of modern structural restoration was observed.
Provenance
• From an Important Private Toronto Collection
• Accompanied by a valuation certificate from Waddington, McLean Valuations Limited, Toronto, dated March 22nd, 1982
