Description

A STRAW-GLAZED POTTERY FIGURE OF A STANDING HORSE
TANG DYNASTY (618–907)
ESTIMATE: $8.000 – $10.000
Description
This elegant and finely modeled pottery figure of a standing horse exemplifies the artistic sophistication of the Tang Dynasty. The horse is depicted standing four-square on a rectangular base, with its head slightly turned to the left in a spirited and alert pose. The body is covered in a rich, finely crazed straw-colored glaze with a subtle green tint, which has developed a beautiful iridescent patina over centuries.
The anatomical details are rendered with great precision, from the muscular arch of the neck to the refined features of the head, including alert ears, well-defined eyes, and flared nostrils. The horse is caparisoned with a decorative breast strap adorned with molded floral medallions, and a saddle draped with a pleated saddlecloth that falls gracefully over its flanks. The hindquarters are further embellished with molded floral appliqués. The unglazed lower legs and base reveal the compact, buff-colored earthenware body typical of Tang funerary sculpture (mingqi).
Dimensions
• Overall Size: 38 cm x 16 cm x 48 cm (15.0 in x 6.3 in x 18.9 in)
CONDITION REPORT
The figure is in overall good and stable condition. As is characteristic of Tang dynasty pottery, there are areas of minor surface wear, expected glaze flaking, and natural degradation of the pigments consistent with age and burial. The head and neck show minor surface abrasions, and there is slight rubbing to the molded decorations on the breast strap and saddle. The lower legs show remnants of original burial loess. No evidence of major structural repair or modern restoration was detected under standard examination.
