QIANLONG PERIOD (1736–1795)
清乾隆 掐丝珐琅嵌玉饕餮纹四足方鼎式炉
ESTIMATE: $35.000– $55.000
Description
This exquisite incense burner is designed in the archaic fangding (square ding) form, reflecting the Qianlong Emperor’s profound interest in antiquity and the fusion of diverse materials. The rectangular vessel is constructed with a gilt-bronze frame inset with four nephrite jade plaques. Each plaque is masterfully carved in low relief with archaic taotie mask motifs, characteristic of the bronze-inspired aesthetics of the mid-Qing dynasty. The corners and the centers of each side are embellished with vertical gilt-bronze notched flanges.
The vessel is supported by four cylindrical legs decorated in vibrant cloisonné enamel with scrolling clouds and colorful motifs on a turquoise ground. The upper rim features two upright U-shaped handles, similarly decorated with cloisonné enamel and geometric patterns. The reticulated cover is an artistic triumph, featuring pierced cloisonné work depicting the Bagua (Eight Trigrams) amidst swirling auspicious clouds. It is crowned by a finely carved carnelian agate finial in the shape of a gnarled lingzhi mushroom, symbolizing longevity. The underside of the vessel is finished with a turquoise enamel base featuring scrolling floral vines and a central recessed gilt-bronze square incised with a six-character mark in regular script: Da Qing Qianlong Nian Zhi (Made in the Qianlong Reign of the Great Qing).

CONDITION REPORT
The incense burner is in overall excellent and stable condition. The jade plaques exhibit a consistent pale celadon tone with minor natural inclusions and no visible cracks or chips. The cloisonné enamel remains vibrant with only typical, minor pitting and surface wear consistent with age. The gilding on the bronze frame and handles shows slight thinning in areas due to handling but retains a brilliant luster. The carnelian finial is secure and intact.
