Description
This substantial scholar’s rock is carved from a solid piece of red jasper, a material highly prized in the literati tradition for its auspicious color and dense, tactile quality. The stone features a robust, upright form with naturally weathered surfaces and subtle undulations that suggest a sense of hidden movement. Its deep, variegated reddish-brown hue is enriched by darker earthy veining and a smooth, lustrous patina developed through years of handling and appreciation.
The rock is set into a custom-carved dark wood base, which is elegantly fashioned with scrolling cloud motifs and a recessed seat that perfectly fits the stone’s irregular contours. The stark contrast between the warm, vibrant red stone and the deep, somber tone of the base emphasizes the “spirit” of the stone, making it a classic object of contemplation for a traditional Chinese study.

CONDITION REPORT
The red jasper stone is in overall excellent and stable condition. It retains its natural structural integrity with only minor surface abrasions, tiny pits, and natural fissures inherent to the material. The surface has a soft, polished sheen consistent with its age and use as a scholar’s object. The carved wood base is well-preserved, showing a deep, rich patina with only minor surface wear and a few tiny age-related drying cracks. No signs of modern restoration or structural repair were observed.
