Description
A RARE HONGSHAN CULTURE JADE ‘XUANJI’ (ARCILLARY DISC)
C. 4000–3000 BC
ESTIMATE: $2.000– $3.000
Description
This exceptional jade xuanji, or toothed arcillary disc, is a classic ceremonial object from the Hongshan Culture of the Neolithic period. The disc features a central circular aperture and is characterized by its three distinctive projecting flanges or “teeth” radiating from the perimeter in a dynamic, swirling motion. These notched projections are masterfully carved with subtle, rounded edges, reflecting the primitive yet sophisticated lapidary skills of early Chinese civilizations.
The jade material exhibits a translucent pale celadon-green hue, heavily suffused with characteristic “chicken-bone” white calcification and russet-colored iron inclusions from long-term burial. The surface is polished to a soft, waxy luster, with slight undulations and an uneven thickness that thin toward the outer serrated edges—a hallmark of authentic Hongshan hand-grinding techniques.
Dimensions
• Diameter: 4.8 cm
• Thickness: 0.4 cm
• Weight: 13.0 g
CONDITION REPORT
The jade xuanji is in overall excellent condition for its age. The stone displays significant natural alteration and mineralization consistent with its Neolithic origin, including characteristic pitting, surface erosion, and calcification. There are minor age-related nicks along the delicate edges and traces of earth encrustation. No modern professional restorations or structural fractures were observed.
