Description

A RARE ENAMEL-PAINTED ‘MANDARIN DUCKS’ BOWL WITH BAMBOO-WOVEN EXTERIOR
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
ESTIMATE: $$10.000– $20.000
Description
This extraordinary bowl represents a rare and ingenious marriage of ceramic art and traditional organic handicraft. The vessel is uniquely constructed with a finely potted porcelain interior encased within an intricately hand-woven natural bamboo “skin” on the exterior. This technique, highly prized during the Kangxi reign, was designed to protect the hands from heat while providing a rustic, tactile contrast to the refined porcelain within.
The interior is brilliantly decorated in the falangcai (enamel) style. The central medallion features a charming scene of Mandarin ducks—traditional symbols of marital fidelity—amidst a lotus pond. The male duck is depicted with vivid, multi-colored plumage perched upon a rock, while the female glides through the water. The inner rim is finished with a dense and opulent border of scrolling peonies set against a vibrant iron-red ground. The contrast between the humble, organic texture of the bamboo wickerwork and the jewel-like brilliance of the imperial-style enamels makes this a quintessential example of high-Qing scholar’s taste.
Dimensions
• Diameter (Rim): 15.2 cm (5.98 in)
• Diameter (Foot): 7.5 cm (2.95 in)
• Height: 10.5 cm (4.13 in)
CONDITION REPORT
The bowl shows significant signs of age. The porcelain interior has a visible vertical hairline crack extending from the rim, along with a network of star cracks (chicken-claw cracks) visible in the center. The natural bamboo weaving on the exterior remains largely intact, though it exhibits characteristic darkening and minor fraying at the edges consistent with its 300-year history. There are minor chips to the porcelain rim.
