Description
This charming pair of blue and white jars depicts a lively and continuous scene of “Boys at Play” (yingxi), a traditional theme representing the wish for many sons and the continuation of the family lineage. Each jar is painted with various groups of children engaged in festive activities: some are seen parading with a dragon banner, others carry a large floral vase, and one group is gathered around a jar, possibly playing a game of “hide and seek” or “cricket fighting.”
The jars are of sturdy, ovoid form with short, unglazed necks, likely originally intended to have wooden or porcelain covers. The shoulders are decorated with a classic key-fret (huwen) border, while the base is finished with double-ring lines. The cobalt blue is applied with varying tones to create a sense of depth in the landscape, which includes stylized rockery, swirling clouds, and patches of grass. This pair exemplifies the popular folk-style porcelain produced during the 19th century, blending auspicious symbolism with spirited narrative detail.

CONDITION REPORT
The jars are in overall stable condition. One jar shows a minor firing fissure to the unglazed neck and a small localized area of pitting in the glaze, consistent with period kiln conditions. The blue and white decoration remains clear and well-preserved. No major cracks, chips, or professional restorations were detected under standard inspection. There is expected shelf wear to the unglazed foot rims.
