A PAIR OF PERSIMMON-GLAZED ‘AUSPICIOUS CHARACTERS’ TEA BOWLS
SOUTHERN SONG DYNASTY, YULIN KILN
南宋 玉林亭窑柿红釉金彩文字盏一对
ESTIMATE: $1,200 – $1,800
Description
This rare pair of tea bowls originates from the Yulin kiln during the Southern Song dynasty, a period renowned for the sophisticated development of dark-glazed tea wares. Both bowls are covered in a rich, matte persimmon-red glaze (shihong), which transitions to a dark chocolate-brown near the foot. The interior of each bowl is elaborately decorated with gilt-painted auspicious characters and motifs.
One bowl features the central character “Fu” (福 – Blessing/Fortune), while the other features the character “Shou” (寿 – Longevity). These central characters are set within a radial sunburst pattern and surrounded by additional auspicious calligraphy including “An” (安 – Peace) and “Le” (乐 – Joy). The calligraphic elements are framed by a delicate scrolling ruyi-head border at the rim. The bowls sit on a short, unglazed ring foot, revealing a coarse, reddish-buff stoneware body characteristic of the Yulin kiln’s production.
Dimensions
• Diameter: 9.1 cm; 9.5 cm
CONDITION REPORT
The pair of tea bowls is in overall stable condition. The gilt-painted decorations show typical oxidation and softening consistent with their great age, yet the characters remain legible. There are minor firing imperfections, including pinholes and glaze contractions, which are inherent to Song dynasty kiln conditions. Small chips and natural wear are present on the unglazed foot rims.
