Description

A LARGE PETRIFIED WOOD SCHOLAR’S ROCK
QING DYNASTY (1644–1911)
清 木化石供
ESTIMATE: $3,000 – $5,000
Description
This substantial scholar’s rock is fashioned from a large specimen of petrified wood, valued by the literati for its unique fusion of organic arboreal form and enduring lithic substance. The stone is characterized by its vertical, columnar structure, featuring deeply recessed vertical grooves and ridges that mimic the natural grain and bark of an ancient tree trunk. The surface exhibits a lustrous, pale creamy-white patina, accented by subtle patches of warm ochre and reddish-brown mineral inclusions.
The specimen is supported by a masterfully carved root-wood stand, which is intricately fashioned to resemble a gnarled, twisting root system. The deep reddish-brown tone of the wood provides a striking visual contrast to the pale stone, enhancing its verticality and natural presence. Such “spirit stones” (gongshi) were traditionally displayed in the scholar’s studio as objects of meditation, representing a microcosm of the natural world.
Dimensions
• Stone Size: 9 cm x 16 cm x 32 cm (3.5 in x 6.3 in x 12.6 in)
• Overall Height (with stand): 45.8 cm (18.0 in)
CONDITION REPORT
The scholar’s rock is in overall excellent and stable condition. The petrified wood retains its natural structural integrity, with various natural fissures, apertures, and internal mineral variations inherent to the material. The surface has a smooth, polished quality consistent with handled scholar’s objects of the Qing dynasty. The root-wood stand is well-preserved, featuring a deep, original patina and only minor expected surface wear and tiny age-related drying cracks consistent with its age. No evidence of modern repair or restoration was observed.
Provenance
• From an Important Private Canadian Collection
