Description
This masterfully carved jade pendant features a dynamic openwork composition of a dragon amidst scrolling foliage. The dragon is depicted with a powerful, undulating body and its head turned back with a spirited expression, characteristic of the vigorous style of Ming dynasty animal carvings. The mythical creature is entwined with finely rendered lingzhi (fungus of immortality) and scrolling leaves, symbolized by delicate openwork and incised detailing.
The jade is of a translucent celadon-to-greyish tone, suffused with extensive natural russet and dark brown “mercury” stains from long-term burial. The surface is polished to a soft, waxy luster, with the deep carvings creating a sense of three-dimensional depth and vitality. The pendant maintains a flat, substantial profile with rounded edges.
