Description
A RARE WHITE JADE ‘ANIMAL MASK’ PENDANT (LEZI)
LIANGZHU STYLE
良渚风格 兽面纹玉勒子
ESTIMATE: $1,200 – $1,800
Description
This exceptional white jade lezi, or prismatic pendant, is carved in the iconic style associated with the Neolithic Liangzhu Culture. The piece features a rectangular form with notched edges, creating a rhythmic, architectural silhouette. Both primary faces are meticulously decorated in low relief with a stylized animal mask (taotie) motif, characterized by large, circular eyes and sweeping, scrolled patterns that represent the mysterious deity or protector spirits of early Chinese cosmology.
The jade material is of a high-quality, translucent white tone with a warm, waxy luster. Evidence of its archaic character is visible in the subtle russet mineralization and natural surface weathering suffused into the recesses of the carving. The pendant is vertically bored with a central aperture, allowing it to be suspended as a powerful protective amulet. The sophisticated balance between the geometric form and the fluid, symbolic carving reflects the refined aesthetic of high-status ritual jades.
