Description
This finely carved white jade disc, or bi, is an exceptional representative of Han Dynasty lapidary artistry. The surface is elaborately decorated in low relief with a fluid “Kui Dragon” pattern. The dragons are rendered with undulating, serpentine bodies and scrolled appendages that interweave across the field, creating a sense of rhythmic energy and movement characteristic of the period’s aesthetic.
The jade is of a high-quality translucent white tone with a warm, waxy luster. Evidence of its significant antiquity is present in the form of natural russet and dark brown mineralization suffused into the stone from long-term burial. The carving is precise, with the polished surfaces of the relief motifs contrasting beautifully against the slightly textured ground. As seen in the side profile, the disc maintains a consistent and refined thickness.
