Description
A RARE LIANGZHU CULTURE JADE DISC (HUAN)
C. 3300–2300 BC
良渚文化 玉环
ESTIMATE: $800– $1.200
Description
This substantial jade disc, or huan, is a definitive ritual object from the Neolithic Liangzhu Culture of the Yangtze River Delta. The disc features a characteristically large central aperture relative to its overall width, distinguishing it as a huan according to classical Chinese jade terminology. The stone is of a pale, translucent celadon-green tone, now largely transformed by millenniums of burial into a mottled, opaque cream and “chicken-bone” white calcification.
The carving demonstrates the primitive yet monumental lapidary techniques of the period, with a slightly irregular circular perimeter and a central hole that shows evidence of being drilled from both sides (bi-directional drilling). The disc exhibits a flat profile with soft, weathered edges resulting from centuries of natural erosion. The surface is suffused with dark russet and black inclusions, likely iron and manganese from the surrounding soil, which add to its profound archaic character.
Dimensions
• Diameter: 8.6 cm
• Thickness: 0.5 cm
• Weight: 70 g
CONDITION REPORT
The jade huan is in stable condition consistent with its Neolithic age. The surface exhibits extensive natural calcification, weathering, and characteristic pitting. Small nicks and minor erosion are visible along the perimeter and central aperture. No modern structural repairs or fractures were detected under standard visual inspection.
