The snuff bottle is elegantly potted in porcelain, featuring a flared mouth, a slender tapering neck, and a gracefully drooping pear-shaped body supported by a low, recessed foot. This sophisticated silhouette is a masterful miniaturization of the classic yuhuchunping (pear-shaped vase), a form that reached its aesthetic peak during the early Qing dynasty. The exterior is enveloped in a deep, jet-black glaze of exceptional density and luster, characterized by a smooth, mirror-like finish that accentuates the crispness of the potting. The interior and base are typically finished with a clear or slightly celadon-tinted glaze, providing a subtle contrast to the dark exterior.
Black-glazed wares, often referred to as “mirror black” (wujin xi) when they achieve this level of intense brilliance, reached a state of technical perfection during the Kangxi reign. Achieving such a pure, stable black required precise control of iron and manganese content in the glaze, as well as masterful temperature management in the kiln. While porcelain snuff bottles of the Kangxi period often featured cobalt blue or overglaze enamels, this monochrome black example reflects a more restrained, literati-inspired taste. The choice of the yuhuchunping form—originally a vessel for wine—adds a layer of historical elegance to this functional object. Standing at 8.3 cm, this bottle is a rare and early representative of the black-glazed ceramic tradition within the world of Qing dynasty snuff bottle collecting.
