The first bottle is an elegant example of red overlay on opaque white glass. The artisan has skillfully carved through the vibrant red layer to the “snowflake” white ground, depicting a charming scene of two birds perched amongst seasonal blossoms. The reverse is centered with a boldly carved “Shou” (Longevity) character, framed by the richness of the red glass. The second bottle is a technically complex multi-colored overlay, featuring layers of blue and white glass over an opaque white ground. Both sides are intricately carved with “birds and flowers” motifs, where the contrasting blue and white layers create a sophisticated, cameo-like three-dimensional effect.

The technique of overlay glass (taoliao) represents one of the most prestigious categories of Qing dynasty glass production, often originating from the Imperial Glassworks in Beijing. The “Red on White” combination is a classic tribute to the aesthetics of carved cinnabar lacquer, while the multi-colored blue and white overlay demonstrates the technical height of 19th-century glass innovation. The “Birds and Flowers” motif is a perennial favorite, symbolizing the harmony of nature, while the addition of the “Shou” character elevates the piece to an object of auspicious celebration. • Condition: Both bottles are in overall very good condition. The carved decoration is crisp and well-defined. Minor expected surface wear and natural air bubbles inherent to the glass. No significant chips or cracks.
